This is a great tofu burger recipe that gives packet vegetarian/vegan burgers a run for their money in terms of flavour. Try it in a bap loaded with sliced tomato, lettuce, and guacamole - and/or some of the Hellman's Vegan Mayo.
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, crushed
225g (8oz) firm plain tofu
3 tablespoons oats
2 tablespoons of chick pea flour (also called gram flour)
1-2 tablespoons of shoyu or tamari style soy sauce
1 teaspoons sweet or smoked paprika
1 teaspoon marjoram
1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon of chilli powder
1/2 teaspoon of all spice
a little extra oil for frying
Makes 4-6 burgers
Instructions:
Heat the olive oil in a sauteuse pan and gently fry the onion, adding the garlic after a few minutes. When soft but not brown, take off the heat. Add in the tofu and mash it all up together into a soft mixture.
Add all the other dry ingredients. Divide it into 6 balls, and then flatten each ball out into a burger shape. Put in the fridge to cool for 10 minutes.
Wipe the sauteuse pan dry and clean with some kitchen roll. Add the oil for frying, and heat gently. Fry the burgers on a gentle heat until browned on each side, and serve hot.
